The Toronto Maple Leafs added three of the toughest NHLers of all-time to their roster for the Alumni Showdown ahead of the 2013 NHL Winter Classic.
Enforcers Tie Domi, Dave ‘Tiger’ Williams and Brad May will all be in the lineup when the Leafs take on the Detroit Red Wings Dec. 31 at Comerica Park.
The three former Leafs have nearly 10,000 combined penalty minutes in a combined 3,023 National Hockey League regular season games. Williams is the NHL’s all-time leader in penalty minutes with 3,966 while Domi ranks third on the list with 3,515 and May ranks 36th with 2,248.
Domi is one of the most popular Maple Leafs alumni and had his best seasons in Toronto. The Windsor, Ont., native was drafted by the team in the second round, 27th overall, in 1988. After playing two games for the Leafs during the 1989-90 season he was traded to the New York Rangers. He also spent time with the Winnipeg Jets before returning to Toronto in 1995. Domi played the last ten seasons of his NHL career with the Leafs before retiring after the 2005-06 campaign.
Williams played for the Leafs from 1974-1980 and May, who is a hockey analyst for Sportsnet, played 38 games with the Leafs during the 2008-09 season.
Detroit also added a group of players to their alumni squad. Defenceman Aaron Ward and forwards Red Berenson, Jimmy Carson and Dennis Polonich will participate.
Because of the rich history of the two storied franchises, there will be two alumni games and around 100 players taking part.
The 2012-13 editions of the Red Wings and Maple Leafs will play the Winter Classic on Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
